Embrapa SL develops research on food safety and quality of animal origin (beef cattle, dairy cattle and sheep) and sustainability of agricultural production. Topics range from animal and plant breeding, environmental aspects of livestock, creation and validation of traceability systems and product certification; nutrition and animal health, focusing on products still called alternative, such as herbal medicines for use in animals. The Centre also carries out research on the use, treatment and disposal of residues in agriculture.
The Centre also coordinates a research network on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in livestock. Their technologies promote the sustainable use of the biomes of the Southeast region, the rational use of natural resources and the recovery of degraded areas, such as the adoption of high productivity pastures with intensive technology. The goal is to provide consumers with quality milk and leather and softer, more flavorful meat; developed in sustainable agricultural systems that preserve the environment and diversify producers’ income.
